Notes for George Brodie:

The Brodies are one of the original Pictish tribes of Moray, and the name comes

from the ancient Thaneage. It is known that Michael, Thane of Brodie, received

a charter from King Robert Bruce shortly before the battle of Banockburn, but

factual history on the clan is scarce since in 1645 all records were destroyed

when Brodie Castle, near Forres, was burned by Lord Lewis Gordon in the

Covenanting conflict.

Malcolm was Thane of Brodie in the time of Alexander III, and Michael, son of

Malcolm, Thane of Brodie had a charter about 1311 from Robert the Bruce,

erecting the old Celtic Thaneage into a Barony. Alexander Brodie of Brodie, who

was appointed Lord of Session as Lord Brodie in 1649, was one of the

commissioners sent from Scotland to Charles II. during his exile at The Hague.

His son and successor, James Brodie of Brodie married Lady Mary Ker, daughter

of William, 3rd Earl of Lothian.  Leaving 9 daughters bot no son, he was

succeeded as heir of entail by George, son of Joseph Brodie of Asliesk, younger

brother of Lord Brodie.  This George married Emily, fifth daughter, and

co-heiress of his predecessor, and died in 1716.  He left 3 sons and 2

daughters.  James Brodie of Brodie the elder died young in 1720 and was

succeeded by his brother, Alexander Brodie of Brodie, Lord Lyon, King of Arms,

1727-1754.

The LOrd Lyon's son, Alexander Brodie of Brodie, having died early, the

chiefship and estate passed to his second cousin James, son of James Brodie of

Spynie, Serriff Deputy of Moray. This chief was Lord Lieutenant of the County

of Nairn, and married Lady Margaret Duff, youngest daughter of William, first

Earl of Fife.  He was succeeded by his grandson, William Brodie of Brodie, also

Lord Lieutenant of Nairnshire, from whom are descended the subsequent and

present chiefs of the Brodie Clan.

The original castle had been erected in 1609 and the present building which is

owned by the National Trust for Scotland, incorporates the old fortalice. The

Brodies recovered their standing after the seventeenth century, and although it

is not thought that they participated actively in politics, they maintained a

considerable standing in their county.

The notorious Deacon William Brodie who lived in Edinburgh in the 18th century,

respectable by day, a thief by night, is a disreputable connection. He was

hanged by a mechanism of his own devising in 1788.

The principal branches of the Clan are :Brodie of Lethen, descending from a

son of Lord Brodie; Brodie of Idvies in Angus; and a Baronetical Branch

deriving from Sir Benjamin Brodie, Surgeon to the Royal Family, 1834.

Family stories passed down to me claimed a relationship to a Brodie who was

Surgeon to the Royal Family.  I'll bet it was Sir Benjamin.

He was probably related to George Brodie who married Margaret Gordon.

Notes for Margaret Gordon:

Gordon Clan

This is a name derived from the Parish of Gordon in Berwickshire. The

progenitors of the powerful clan of the name were Anglo-Norman and settled in

thesouth of Scotland in the twelfth century.  Adam de Gordon was one of the

Scots barons who joined King Louis XI of France in the crusade of 1270.

In the reign of King Robert the Bruce, Sir Adam, Lord of Gordon, obtained a

grant of the Lordship of Strathbogie in Aberdeenshire.       He proved of the

greatest service to the cause of Scottish , for as Ambassador to Rome it was he

who effected a reconciliation between the Bruce and the Pope. He was slain at

the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333.  His great-grandson, also Sir Adam also

fell at the Battle of Homildon in 1402 leaving an only child and heiress,

Elizabeth, who inherited all her father's possessions.

Elizabeth de Gordon married Alexander, second son of Sir William Seton of

Seton.     Her only son, Alexander, was created in 1449 Earl of Huntly, with

limitation to the issue of his third wife, such heirs assuming the surname and

bearing the name of Gordon.  (the Earl had no issue by his first wife; his

only son by his second wife , carried on the name of "Seton".). George, 2nd

Earl, left four sons.  The second, Adam, married Elizabeth, Countess (and

heiress) of Sutherland.

George, 6th Earl of Huntly who, along with Lord Errol, defeated Argyll in

1592 at the Battle of Glenlivet was created Marquis in 1599 . The second

Marquis was survived by two sons--Lewis, third Marquis, and Charles, created

Earl of Aboyne in 1660.  George, fourth Marquis, was in 1684 created Duke of

Gordon.  The 4th Duke married the celebrated Jane Maxwell, and they raised the

Gordon Highlanders.

On the death of the fifthe Duke of Gordon, the title became extinct, and the

Marquessat passed to the Earl of Aboyne, and the Estates to the Duke of

Richmond, who in 1876 was created Duke of Gordon in the Peerage of the United

Kingdom.

The Gordons of Methlic acquired the lands of Haddo in 2533, and in 1642 Sir

John was created a Baronette of Nova Scotia, Sir George, who was President of

the Court of Session, received the Earldom of Aberdeenin 1682, and John, 7th

Earl and 1st Marquess, was Governor-General of Canada and later Lord-Lieutenant

of Ireland.
